Rebuild the Dream partners with Prince

Joining the movement for social change should feel like joining a block party, not joining a study group.

Well, last week in Chicago we threw a heck of a party with a good friend -- the legendary artist Prince.

Tens of thousands of people came to the United Center in Chicago to see the Prince, but they all left with so much more. Our Rebuild the Dream Village connected thousands of people to local organizations working to rebuild Chicago.

Check out Van's article on Huffpost for more background on how this partnership came about.

This was just the latest Rebuild the Dream event to use art and creativity to promote social change. Our Revivals in LA, Hawaii, and Wisconsin throughout 2012 brought together artists, community organizations, and people. Prince was just the biggest and best one yet.

Highlights from Welcome2Chicago Rebuild the Dream Village:

As thousands of people streamed into the United Center in Chicago last week to see Prince, they were welcomed by local volunteers inviting them to participate in the Rebuild the Dream Village -- a celebration of solutions in the areas of Community, Economy, Food and Planet. Learn more about the Rebuild the Dream Village here.

Each day concert attendees were introduced to local organizations working to rebuild Chicago. Everyone who visited a table in each section got entered into a drawing to win a pair of front row 'Purple Circle' seats that night. Each table had something different for people to actively participate in. You could register to vote at the Chicago Votes table, take a pledge to eat healthier locally grown food at the Fresh Moves table or get your picture taken holding a protest sign in front of the Washington monument by the Chicago Freedom School.

Check out our blog for recaps of Day 1 and Day 2.

At the two Rebuild the Dream tables attendees could take a quiz about how and why "America is Being Robbed". Take the quiz yourself here.

Over the three days of music and celebration we had:

  • Over 60,000 people participated in the Rebuild the Dream Village
  • 26 groups from across Chicago participate
  • 75 local volunteers activated to welcome attendees to the Village
  • Over 6,000 connections were made between attendees and local sustainable organizations in Chicago

For a day-by-day account and more pictures, check out our Storify page of the event.

All in all it was a wild three days and a huge success. We’re looking forward to doing it all again in a city near you!
